Handfasting is a Scottish tradition and not at all Hawaiian in origin. But keep in mind that Hawaii is an extremely multi-cultural community, with people and nationalities from all over the greater Pacific basin, as well as the rest of the world. The first Europeans to find Hawaii were from England, so including a Scottish tradition is entirely fair.
Handfasting is where the couple join arms, each hand holding the forearm of the other. Six ribbons are wrapped about your clasped arms along with six vows. You can write your own vows or we can use ones I have.
At the end, you both grab hold of the ends of the ribbons and pull, creating a messy knot. This is what it means to “tie the knot!” You’ve heard this phrase all your lives, and now you see what it is.
This handfasting webpage on YouTube describes it best.
Not only is it fun, you get a special keepsake to take home with you unlike any other. This ritual is available on request and has no extra fee. I can bring ribbons or you can bring your own.
